An unidentified member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reportedly drowned in a swimming pool in Enugu.
The Enugu state police command at the weekend said it has commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged drowning of the corps member at a hotel swimming pool at Ugwuoba, Oji River local government area of Enugu state.
The incident happened on Saturday April 8, 2017.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police (SP) who confirmed the death in a statement released to journalists, stated that a group of Corps members had allegedly gone to a hotel at Ugwuoba in Enugu state identified as Hotel De Oranzi Resort Agungwu Ogbooo Ugwuoba for picnicking and in the ensuing swimming exercise amongst the celebrating corps members, one of them whose name is yet to be established allegedly got drowned and was later rescued and rushed to General Hospital Amaku Awka for medical attention.
Amaraizu said that the corps member was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
The PPRO said that the dead body of the deceased corps member has been deposited at the hospital morgue while efforts were being intensified to establish the full identity of the corps member.
He however noted that two persons have been nabbed in connection with the incident and they are helping the operatives in their investigations.
Amaraizu stated that in another development, the state command has vowed to flush out suspected criminals/hoodlums from their various hideouts through the ongoing mass raiding of suspected hideouts/hoodlums in the state through intelligence gathering.
“The command’s move was revealed following the arrest of some suspected armed robbers and recovery of arms by its operatives at Agbani Axis of Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state where the command’s operatives, acting on intelligence information on 7/4/17 raided a hotel identified as Classique Hotel located at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state and the arrest of one Chinecherem Ogbonna of Akpugo also in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state and Chika Nwosu of Ngbo in Awgu local Government Area of Enugu state.
“Recovered from the suspects are a locally made gun and a CRV Honda Jeep with Registration number DK 819 ENU. The suspects are helping the operatives in their investigations in relation to their nefarious activities within Nkanu West axis and its environs,” he said.
