The Police in Bayelsa state has confirmed the killing of one Mr.Ebikabowei Umbu aged 37 and the abduction of a popular Ijaw musician Pereama Freetown.
The victim was shot dead by unknown gunmen few weeks ahead of the governorship election in the state billed for December 5, 2015. The incumbent Governor Seriake Dickson and a former governor, Chief Timipre Sylva are contesting the hot seat in the creek haven.
Ebikabowei was killed while trying to escape from the hoodlums, but Freetown was kidnapped at about 0300hrs on Sunday at Polaku community when the gunmen invaded the area.
Police in a statement by its spokesman, Butswat Asinim, an Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP said none of the gunmen were arrested as they escaped through Polaku river to an unknown destination.
The PPRO said at about 0300hrs on Sunday some unknown gunmen invaded Polaku Community in Yenagoa LGA, and abducted Pereama Freetown, a popular musician.
Police said the musician was kidnapped while performing at a wake keep in the community just as a flying bullet hit Ebikabowei who died later.
Freetown, before his abduction, was on stage entertaining his fans before suddenly gunmen opened fire on the crowd and whisked him (Freetown) away to an unknown place.
“While escaping with the victim, the unknown gunmen shot sporadically killing Ebikabowei Umbu ‘m’ 37yrs.
The spokesperson also said the hoodlums escaped in a waiting speedboat to an unknown destination.
“They escaped through the Polako river to an unknown destination.
Bayelsa state police command insisted that The Marine Police, Anti Kidnapping unit and Operation Pulo Shield have swung into action in search of the victim and the arrest of the suspects.”
