Cult clash claims 3 lives, 2 injured in Bayelsa

Gov. Henry Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa State Governor

CHINEDU WOSU,
YENAGOA

Rival cult groups in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Capital over the weekend unleashed mayhem on each other and  killed three persons and injured scores of others in separate attacks in the city.

The rampaging cultists who created tension  in the city also snatched handsets, other valuables and women’s bags as they hunted down  their victims, making some parts of the state too hot.

The groups which included members of Greenlanders and Icelanders ravaged Punch road axis, Amarata, Ompadec, Ebele and Ovom areas forcing residents of the areas to go to bed before 9pm.

Although no concrete reasons were given as to why the two cult groups clashed,  sources told GPN that a member of Icelander was stabbed severally on the neck and back making the Icelanders to retaliate by taking the laws into their hands. They killed one person along Punch Road  while others scampered for safety.

The separate attacks by the rampaging cults paralyzed night life as Keke (tricycle) operators disappeared from the road, inflicting hardship on those returning home from work.

None of the cultists was arrested by the Police during and after the mayhem as they disappeared into  tin air, leaving the dead and the injured behind.

Our Correspondent gathered that most of the victims were boys and youths between the ages of 20 and 22 years.

Contacted for comments, Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butwats while confirming the attacks by the cultists said only one person was killed and two others stabbed.

The PPRO said the Command would deploy its gallant men to all the nooks and crannies of the state to ensure safety of lives and property.
GPN reports that over 17 youths of various age  brackets were arrested by the Police for crimes ranging from cultism, armed robbery and stealing keke across the city.

Recall that Mr. Asuquo Amba, Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police said recently that the Command has renewed its crime fighting strategy by intensifying police patrols and surveillance and he  urged members of the public to volunteer useful information on proper community policing to curb criminalities, cultism and armed robbery across the state capital.

Amba insisted that the strategy had paid off with the arrest of armed robbers, recovery of fire arms, recovery of cars and arrest of suspected cultists.
