DSS arrests NLC President, Joe Ajaero at Abuja Airport; Invades SERAP office

Operatives of the Department of the State Services (DSS) have reportedly arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero.

Ajaero was said to have been arrested on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on his way to the United Kingdom to attend the Trade Union Congress (TUC) conference billed to commence today in London.

As at press time, no official reason had been given for his arrest. But the Labour Union said to have activated its machinery in readiness to protest the arrest of its leader.

In a related development, operatives of the DSS have invaded the office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The rights group raised the alarm in a post on its X handle on Monday, saying, as at the time of the post, that the DSS operatives were still in its office.

The group, which said that the security agents were asking for its directors, asked President Bola Tinubu to order the operatives to immediately end their “unlawful” activity.

The post said: “Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) are presently unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, asking to see our directors.

“President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end the harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians.”

SERAP had only on yesterday, Sunday, September 8, 2024, given President Bola Tinubu a 48 hours ultimatum to reverse the unlawful petrol price hike, and probe the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)  (https://globalpatriotnews.com/serap-gives-tinubu-48-hours-to-reverse-unlawful-petrol-price-hike-probe-nnpcl/).
