With less than three months to the Edo Governorship election scheduled for Sept 19, the membership strength of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state increased on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that this was as a result of the defection to the party by some executive members, as well as members of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) from three Local government Areas in the state.
Mr Oshodin Izedomwen, the State Organising Secretary of the ADP who led the defectors said that they decided to join the PDP not out of compulsion, but because they believed in the capacity of the party to deliver it’s candidate in the forth coming governorship election.
Izedomwen who also said that he was a foundation member of the PDP in 1999 said that he left the party because of some persons whom he described as “strange bed fellows” who came to join the PDP.
He however said that he and other defectors find it convenient to return home now as those persons have exited the party.
He also said that another motivating factor that led them to pitching tent with the PDP was the antecedents and interest of the party as well as the performance of the Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki who has now joined the party.
According to him, “In politics interest matters as it is a driving force”.
He disclosed that the defectors were from Egor, Ovia South West and Ovia North East Local Government Areas in the state.
Receiving the defectors, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, state party chairman said that he was excited to receive the defectors not because of the calibre of persons who defected, but because of the enthusiasm they exude in coming to join the party because of the performance of the party flag bearer for the Sept 19 poll.
He described the defection of the leader of the team as home coming.
He gave assurance that the defectors would be fully integrated into the party to contribute to the success and performance of the party as performance was the driving force of the party in all ramification.
