Emefiele believed arrested

Suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, is believed to have been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS.

This followed his suspension from office by President Bola Tinubu on Friday, June 9, 2023.

Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi was appointed acting Governor of the CBN.

The DSS had severally wanted to arrest Mr. Emefiele in the recent past especially over allegations that he was sponsoring terrorism.

Immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari was said to have prevailed on the DSS to back off till he left office on May 29, 2023.

It was not clear as at press time what charges the DSS will be pressing against Emefiele or for how long they would be detaining him if they decide to do so.

The statement suspending him had made reference to ongoing investigation of his office.
