Enyimba FC crash out of CAF Confederation Cup after defeat to Zamalek

Enyimba FC of Nigeria crashed out of the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, January 19, following a 3-1 defeat to Zamalek SC in Cairo. The loss ensured the Nigerian club finished third in Group D, failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

The two-time African champions entered the final group-stage fixture needing a win to keep their hopes alive but were outclassed by the defending champions, Zamalek SC. The Egyptian side secured a comfortable victory, confirming their place in the knockout stages alongside compatriots Al Masry SC.

Enyimba’s third-place finish leaves them ahead of Black Bulls of Mozambique, who finished bottom of the group. However, the result also marks the end of Nigeria’s representation in this season’s CAF club competitions, as the other three Nigerian clubs had earlier exited during the preliminary rounds.

This disappointing campaign raises questions about the performance of Nigerian clubs on the continental stage, with Enyimba, the nation’s most successful club in African competitions, unable to break the trend.

As the quarter-finals beckon for the Egyptian clubs, Enyimba will return to focus on domestic competitions, with lessons learned from their continental outing.
