Exodus in Rivers as pro-Wike commissioners resign

A fresh wave of resignations has hit the Rivers State Executive Council as five commissioners, loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, have resigned from Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration.

This move underscores the widening divide between the Governor and his estranged supporter, Wike.

The commissioners’ decisions came after the Governor announced plans to probe the actions of his predecessor and accused Wike of burdening his administration with unpaid debts.

The resignations, dated May 15, were submitted to the Governor through the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo.

Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Education, described the work environment as toxic and unfavorable, stating, “It is unfortunate that my current workspace has become toxic, hindering efficient service delivery.” Austin Ben Chioma, Commissioner for Environment, cited political crisis as his reason for resigning, while Dr. Gift Worlu, Commissioner for Housing, pointed to attempts to merge the executive with the legislature.

Mrs. Inime Aguma, Commissioner for Social Welfare, emphasized the toxic work environment as the basis for her resignation, stating, “There is no room for professional development in the workplace.”

Mr. Jacobson Nbina, Commissioner for Transportation, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention efforts but decided to leave due to unresolved crises.

These resignations highlight the challenges within the Rivers State Executive Council and raise questions about the future direction of the state’s leadership
