FCE Ididep matriculates 583 pioneer students, marks historic beginning

The Federal College of Education (FCE), Ididep, in Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday marked a major milestone as it held the first matriculation ceremony for its pioneer set of 583 students, officially launching academic activities at the institution.

The colourful event took place on the college campus in Ididep, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of the State, and drew dignitaries from the education sector, government, and traditional institutions who came to witness what many described as the birth of a new centre of learning.

In his address, the pioneer Provost, Dr Edem Ntuk, described the occasion as the realisation of a “long-awaited dream” and a historic step in the growth of teacher education in Nigeria.

He explained that the college was established by the Federal Government in May 2023 and currently runs six schools and twenty departments, all offering the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme.

“Today, I am happy to announce that 583 students have been offered admission into our college for the 2024/2025 academic year,” Dr Ntuk said. He assured the new students and other stakeholders that his administration would work hard to make FCE Ididep “a model college of excellence” and provide an environment that encourages learning, research, and innovation.

The Provost expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the establishment of the college, including the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and TETFund. He also thanked former President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the college, and the Akwa Ibom State Government for providing the land for its permanent site.

Special appreciation was extended to Senator Ita Solomon Enang, whom Dr Ntuk praised for his “tireless efforts” and for providing scholarships to indigenes of the area.

In his goodwill message, Senator Enang, regarded as the vision bearer of the college, recalled the long journey that led to its creation. He commended both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Buhari for supporting the project across different administrations.

The ceremony also featured messages of goodwill from the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ubong Umoh, who conveyed the congratulations and support of Governor Umo Eno. Others who spoke included the Executive Chairman of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Asuakak Umoh, and the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom, His Royal Majesty Edidem Ime Inyang Udousoro, who pledged the cooperation and hospitality of the host communities.

Academic leaders from other institutions were also in attendance, including the Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA), Dr Offiongita Nkang; the Provost of FCE Ofeme-Ohuhu, Abia State, Dr Titus S. Ezeme; and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Uyo, Professor Sr. Anthonia Essien. The Member representing Ibiono Ibom in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Moses Essien, was also present.

The highlight of the day was the administration of the matriculation oath by the College Registrar, Mr. Nsemeke Udoakpan, which formally confirmed the 583 students as members of the institution.

The ceremony, attended by other principal officers including the Bursar, Mr. Samuel Oyighocho, and the Librarian, Dr Celina Nongo, marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of FCE Ididep and in the advancement of teacher education in Nigeria.
