The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Bayelsa state chapter on Tuesday called on the security operatives in the state to arrest and prosecute a 74 year old man who allegedly cut off the manhood of an eight months old boy in the state.
Chairperson of FIDA Bayelsa State, Dise Ogbise-Erhisere, stated this in Yenagoa during a visit to the child at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC.
Erhisere disclosed that the aged man hailed from Ndowari Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
She said that the 74 year old man allegedly cut off the private part of the baby during a process of carrying out circumcision on the boy.
The FIDA authority has, so far, declined to make the identity of the child public even as he is said to be undergoing medical treatment in the state
Narrating the sad and painful incident to newsmen, the father of the child, Joseph Michael who hails from Okpotuwari Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, said that the man demanded the child for circumcision from his wife without his knowledge, and that he only heard that his son’s manhood has been chopped off.
Michael, however, called for financial support for the treatment of the child, saying that the present predicament in the family has drained their little resources, hence he was soliciting help from well meaning individuals and humanitarian organizations.
Our correspondent who visited the eight months old baby at the FMC Yenagoa confirms that about half of the child’s manhood was actually chopped off, and the child is in great pain.
