Fidelity Bank Plc team has bagged the top position at the 2015 edition of the Nigeria Bankers’ Games, as the contingent clinched the prestigious football gold in the football event, to cement its place as the overall best in all competitions.
Having lost their opening group game in the football event to the losing finalists, First Bank, the champions turned out stronger in subsequent games, winning all, save for a draw against former defending champions, UBA on their way to an outstanding performance enroute the finals.
Victor Jideonwu made all the difference, with his brace (2nd and 36th minutes), while Adeleke Adesanya retrieved a consolatory goal for First Bank in the 48th minute.
In a show of pure class, Fidelity Bank ran away leaders finishing with 10 gold medals (two silver and four bronze), with First Bank trailing in second place with three gold, two silver and three bronze.
In third place was UBA with four medals; two gold and silver apiece.
The final day began with a novelty match between the Corporate Nigeria Games Hall of Fame team playing against the Nigeria Armed Forces Resettlement Centre (NAFRC) side which ended 1-0 in favour of the Hall of Famers, captained by Funlola Oni of Standard Chartered Bank.
Oni led Standard Chartered Bank to demystify five-time winners Skye Bank, in a third place match, to win the bronze.
