Fire destroys 22 shops in Anambra

On the Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at about 10:10pm, there was a fire outbreak at Ekene Workshop cluster of Polythene Factories located at Awada in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State.

A statement by SP Haruna Mohammed, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Police Command,

for the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, said that  upon receipt of the distress call, Police Patrol team attached to Awada Division led by the DPO CSP Tony Adeyi rushed to the scene and cordoned off the Area for rescue mission and to prevent looters from taking advantage of the situation to steal.

He said that meanwhile, the Fire Service department was contacted but before their arrival, the fire had been contained through concerted efforts by the members of the Community  who rushed to the scene to put off the fire.

He said that preliminary inquiry revealed that the fire was suspected to have been set off by an electric spark which affected about 22 shops.

Several types of machinery, finished products, raw materials and other properties whose values are yet to be ascertained, he said, were destroyed.

A similar incident occurred at the same location sometime in February, 2018.

Investigation is ongoing to ascertain circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak.
