Suspected Fulani herdsmen have killed one farmer, Friday Etor and injured an eleven year old boy, Nsikak Sylvanus Udo during an attack at a farm in Akwa Ibom State.
The incident happened about 9 am yesterday at Ikot Obio Nso Village in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, near Ekparakwa.
Our Correspondent gathered that, problem started when the deceased went to his farm and to his surprise met a herdsman and cattle feeding on his crops, but when he accosted them in a bid to stop the cattle from destroying his crops, the herdsman resisted him and in the ensued disagreement shot him to death.
Narrating the ordeal, Chairman of Ikot Obio Nso Village Council, Chief Cletus Okodi said, the incident occurred at Ndon Enyin farm at about 9 a.m.
He explained that, the incident attracted members of the community who were equally attacked by the herdsmen thereby making many people to sustain various degrees of injuries from gun shots.
He further stated that, the herdsmen have been with their cattle in the area called ‘’Ndon Enyin’’ for weeks; a farm from where people in the village are currently harvesting their cassava.
Police have confirmed the incident, even as it said, a battery of policemen have been drafted to the area to investigate the matter and maintain law and order.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, “we have received the report of the suspected herdsmen attack in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of the state, and the CP has promptly dispatched officers of the Command to investigate the incident.
He maintained, ‘‘as we speak, our men are on the ground there already”.
Meanwhile, Governor Udom Emmanuel who visited the area condemned the dastardly act saying that, he would not allow the Fulani herdsmen to prey on his people.
The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, during the visit, said he was saddened at the unprovoked attack on the community and, directed the state police command and other sister security agencies to fish out perpetrators of
the violence, which also left several other people hospitalized.
