There was a handover of the Chairmanship position of the Group of 77 nations (G77) and China on January 13, 2025 in New York, United States of America (U.S.A).
The Republic of Uganda, which served as the Chairman of the Group for 2024, handed over the leadership baton to the Republic of Iraq, which was a founding member of the Group 60 years ago at inception.
Iraq was elected as the chairman in September 2024 at the 48th annual meeting of the G77 and China at the United Nations in New York.
Faud Mohammad Hussein, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, will serve as the Chairman of the Group on behalf of his country.
Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres and Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Uganda, who served as Chair of the Group for 2024 gave speeches at the historic event.
