The Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike has lauded former Chief Judge of Rivers State, Retired Justice Daisy Okocha for her contributions towards the development of the game of golf in the state.
She also commended the former Rivers Chief Judge for her contributions to the growth of the game , nationally .
Justice Nyesom-Wike made the commendation on Saturday while unveiling Hole-12 of the 18-Hole Golf Course at the Golf Section of Port Harcourt Club named after the Retired Justice Daisy Okocha.
The Wife of the Governor expressed delight that it is the first time a hole is being named in honour of a woman who was also the first female Chief Judge of Rivers State.
She appreciated Retired Justice Daisy Okocha’s contributions to the game of golf, having served as a Lady Captain and won a bronze medal in golf at the 1989 National Sports Festival .
She thanked the Golf Section for honouring Retired Justice Okocha as a mark of respect for ladies.
In her response, Justice Daisy Okocha described the unveiling as historic, noting that it is a thing of pride for the ladies.
She said by the singular act, the Golf Committee has demonstrated equal opportunity for both men and ladies to own the course.
Earlier, the Captain of the Port Harcourt Golf Section, Sir. Emmanuel Okene noted the role of Retired Justice Daisy Okocha in the golf section.
He said part of the sponsorship is that whenever there is a competition in the course, there will be a Hole-in-1 prize in the hole as well as nearest the pin prize for both men and ladies.
Highlight of the unveiling was the ceremonial tee off by Retired Justice Okocha, followed by a golf tournament for gentlemen and ladies.
The event was attended by the first governor of old Rivers State and Amanyanabo of Twon Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, past president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr O. C. J. Okocha, SAN, the Lady Captain, Mrs. Judith Obomanu-Assisi and other golf enthusiasts.
