The chairman, Board of Directors of Media Trust, Kabiru Yusuf, said this while speaking with newsmen after the presentation of prizes at the end the Daily Trust golf tournament held in Ibom Golf Club in Uyo.
Yusuf, who spoke through the General Manager, Business Strategy of Media Trust Ltd, Ahmed Shekarau, said it was the desire of the media outfit to sustain the tournament, because of its strong belief that the sport of golf could foster unity in the country.
“We know that golf is one of the most veritable platforms for networking. It has become a source of unity for a lot of our citizens.
“You see the kind of people that converge in this place, you will see somebody all the way from Jigawa state coming down to play here and eventually emerges a winner.
“We have people from other parts of the country coming to play here, even from Abuja. So, that kind of thing is a platform through which a lot of Nigerians can come together and then we begin to ask ourselves what exactly is the problem with us.
“If we can come together and play golf why not extend that sense of unity to other platforms, so that some of these crises that we are having can end. We have ethnic, religious crises here and there. I think we should discard them.
“Primarily, Daily Trust has strongly established itself as a strong brand in Nigeria, but largely known within the North and then we feel that it is high time we begin to move South.
“So, that the sense of unity we have been able to foster through golf tournament, we come down to Uyo here and then discharge that kind of responsibility,” he said.
Yusuf commended all the partners, who supported Media Trust to ensure the successful hosting of the golf tournament this year and solicited more support.
Earlier, the Captain of Ibom Golf Club, Usenobong Akpabio in his remarks expressed appreciation to Media Trust Limited for organising the golf tournament and called on other Nigerian Newspapers to emulate the organisation.
Our Correspondent reports that the highpoint of the tournament was the presentation of prizes to winners of the tournament.
One of the winners and former governor of Kogi state, Idris Wadda, won the veteran category prize, while the overall prize was won by Unyime Okon.
