Akwa Ibom State Governor, (Pastor) Umo Eno has distributed ₦750 million in business grants to 15,000 unemployed youths across the state.
This groundbreaking initiative provides ₦50,000 monthly grants to 5,000 beneficiaries, with plans to extend the programme to a total of 60,000 youths over the next 12 months, covering all 31 Local Government Areas.
During the official presentation of the grants at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, Governor Eno described the programme as a vital part of his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment. He encouraged the beneficiaries to use the grants for productive activities that will help them grow personally and contribute to the state’s economy.
“This initiative is part of our wider efforts to recognise and support the immense talent and resilience of Akwa Ibom’s youth,” said Governor Eno.
In addition to the business grants, the Governor announced plans to start civil service recruitment through the State Youth Employment Portal. He urged all eligible youths to register on the portal, which has been designed to make access to jobs and employment opportunities easier and more transparent.
“We are committed to a fair and inclusive process for recruitment, ensuring that all youths have an equal opportunity,” he said.
The Governor also highlighted other programmes aimed at developing youth skills, such as Ibom LED, the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, and the Ibom Community Watch initiative. These programmes provide training, mentorship, and job opportunities, helping youths gain the skills they need for success in today’s competitive job market.
“This is more than just financial support; it is a promise kept and a step towards building a stronger, more inclusive economy,” Governor Eno added.
He also praised the State ICT Directorate for their role in digitalising public services, which has ensured efficient management and transparency in the grant programme.
Dr. Frank Ekpenyong, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on ICT, explained the selection process and reassured the public that the system was set up to ensure only qualified individuals received the grants.
