The Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has called on all Nigerians to join forces with anti-corruption agencies to rid the country of corruption.
Governor Ugwuanyi lamented the rate of corruption in all sectors of the economy describing the situation as ‘a canker worm that has bedevilled the country.’
The governor who made the plea in a speech while receiving the Zonal Commissioner of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) South East zone, Prince Hassan Muhammed who led officers of his team on a courtesy visit to the governor at Government House, in Enugu, noted that ‘it is high time for the nation to rise up to checkmate all avenues of leakage in the economy, especially in this period of dwindling economy.’
In his words, “corruption is a canker worm that retard economic development, I urge all Nigerians including Enugu State to support ICPC on effort to rid the country of corruption.”
The governor promised that his administration will support ICPC in all spheres to discharge their duties in order to bring a positive change in the economic development of the country.
He commended the commission for the progress it has so far recorded, advising the commission to adopt a more pro-active and preventive approach to fight corruption in the country.
In a remark, the Zonal Commissioner ICPC South East zone Prince Muhammed stated that the commission was established by the then Head of State, President Olusegun Obasanjo to checkmate loopholes in all agencies of government.
Prince Muhammed explained that the ICPC agency is saddled with 3 critical functions including enforcement, prevention and public enlightenment, adding that hundreds of millions of naira are recovered annually through its checkmating activities.
He commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his exemplary style of leadership, attesting that Enugu has taken its pride of place in South East zone in service delivery and good governance.
