
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the country’s armed forces for their gallantry and success in securing the country.
In an address on the occasion of the 2016 launching of the Armed Forces Remembrance and Emblem Appeal Week in Enugu, Governor Ugwuanyi assured them of his administration’s solidarity, goodwill and sincere gratitude, urging them not to relent.
He called on all Nigerians to pray for the Nigerian Army for the sustenance of their success in fighting insurgency in the country.
The governor called on all Nigerians to keep faith and commitment with the Nigerian Fallen heroes and heroines who voluntarily laid down their lives in the service of their father land by donating either in cash or kind for the upkeep of these veterans’ dependants and the ex-servicemen who are lucky to be alive but are in needs.
Governor Ugwuaniyi also commended the Enugu State branch of the Nigerian Legion for her initiative and giant strides to rehabilitate their fallen colleagues.
It is a time to remind ourselves of the plight of the ex-servicemen as well as the survival of the dependants of these fallen heroes and show them our appreciation for the sacrifice they made to preserve our lives and the nation, he said.
In an address on the occasion, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Council, Engr. George Amalu noted that the event was set aside for the remembrance of the Nigerian Fallen heroes and heroines who voluntarily laid down their lives in the service of their father land.
He added that the ex-servicemen who are lucky to be alive but are either in need due to infirmity old age or wounded are also remembered during the period under review.
He appealed to all well spirited individuals to donate for the upkeep of these war veterans and fallen heroes’ dependants either in cash or kind.
The chairman enumerated the challenges facing the legion in the state among which are lack of annual subventions to the legion.
He regretted that the legion had been neglected since 2008 in respect of subvention release
He also appealed to Governor Ugwuanyi to donate a bus to the legion as the one earlier donated to it by the past administration has been grounded and needs replacement.
He further requested both the federal and state government to offer scholarships to indigent children of the fallen heroes and to absorb qualified ones into the state civil service.
The event was attended by the state top government officials including the former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo.
