A Save Our Souls (SOS) call has gone out to the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Raji Babatunde Fashola, to hasten to effect immediate repairs on the dilapidated Onitsha-Owerri road that has been cut into two by erosion around the Metallurgical Institute, Onitsha junction.
The call was made by Chief Goddy Uwazurike, the President of the Cultural Credibility Development Initiative (CCDI), a group that champions multi-sectoral development, especially in the South East geo-political zone of the country.
The group, in an open letter to the Minister, said that this very important road that is “crucial to the network of roads leading to the Economic Golden Egg of Nigeria” has become “a present and looming danger to anyone passing through” it, pointing out that “in a sentence, the Onitsha Owerri Rd has been divided into two.”
Stressing that “the roads in Igboland are so dilapidated that road transportation has crumbled beyond description.”
It noted that Fashola as Governor of Lagos State performed very well in the areas of provision and maintenance of good roads, and expressed belief that he can repeat the feat on the Onitsha Enugu road, Enugu Port Harcourt Rd, Ihiala Mbano Umuahia road, the Umuahia Ikot Ekpene road, the Aboh Anioma road, the Umuahia Arochukwu road, Owerri Okigwe road, Owerri PH road, the Uturu Afikpo road, the Owerri Mbaise Obowo road, the Aba Ikot Ekpene road and the 9th mile Benue border road.
They warned that the Minister’s “good name will go down the drain” if he did not urgently rise to the occasion.
