Nigeria travelled from Cairo, where they spent four days in camp as part of their final build-up to the tournament. While in Egypt, the Super Eagles played a pre-AFCON friendly against the Pharaohs but lost 2–1. Defender Chidozie Awaziem scored Nigeria’s only goal in the match.
Several regular starters were rested for the friendly, while other key players joined the squad afterwards. Simon Moses, Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen all linked up with the team on Wednesday, boosting head coach Éric Chelle’s options.
The Super Eagles will continue their preparations in Fes, where they will play all their Group C matches. Nigeria are set to face Tanzania on December 23, Tunisia on December 27, and Uganda on December 30.
The 2025 AFCON will begin on Sunday, December 21, with hosts Morocco opening the tournament against Comoros at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah. Other group matches will be played the following day, including Egypt’s clash with Zimbabwe.
Nigeria head into the tournament aiming for a fourth AFCON title, having previously won the competition in 1980, 1994 and 2013. The Super Eagles finished runners-up at the last edition in Ivory Coast and will be determined to go one step further in Morocco and end their 12-year wait for continental glory.
