How bandits bombed, shot at train along Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor

The attacked train

A vivid account of how a Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) passenger train was attacked by armed bandits on the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor has been given by a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) official in Abuja.

The official, DCC Okafor C. P, DACs Abuja District, NSCDC, in a report, said that the passenger train (LOCO 2701), from Idu train station to Rigasa came under attack by the bandits on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Km 140 at about 20:00 hrs.

According to the statement, the bandits used both explosive devises as well as opened fire on the train with the aim of killing the driver and crippling the train. “The explosive devise on the track hit the train and was followed up with gun shots targeting to kill the driver and bring the loco to a halt.

“But the driver braved the situation and managed the train to Km 148 where it finally stopped due to engine failure caused by the attack” the official said, adding that “a relief loco was later sent from Idu to move the train to Rigasa which is about 40km from the scene of crime . They arrived Rigasa at about 23.30 hrs.”

He confirmed that “No life was lost but the engine and windscreen of the train were badly damaged,” stating further that “arrangements are being made to return the affected loco to Idu for proper check and repairs.”

The statement pointed out that “investigation has commenced to unravel the remote and immediate cause of the explosion/attack.”
