NEDU MARK, Yenagoa
Ahead of the 2016 governorship elections in the state, the Bayelsa Police Command, Thursday, pledged to combat all forms crime and criminality in the state. This is even as the newly-deployed police commissioner in the state distanced himself from political factors in his deployment.
The police command also warned residents of the capital city to steer clear of crime ‘as anybody caught would be prosecuted according to the law.’
Newly deployed Commissioner of Police for the state, Nasiru Disi Oki, stated this in Yenagoa shortly after taking over from the outgoing commissioner, Paul Okafor at the command’s Headquarters in Ovom.
“If anybody commits crime, such person, no matter how highly placed he or she may be would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law of the state”, he said.
On the terrain of the state and the region, Oki said the terrain can not deter him from performing his statutory function as a police officer, noting that he had worked in a similar terrain before in other states.
The commissioner who hails from Osun state was redeployed from Plateau State to Bayelsa state, as he insisted that’ he would do his best to tackle crime in the state.’
He debunked rumours making the rounds that he was posted to the state base on political factor.
“I, Nasiru Disi Oki, I am not posted to Bayelsa state on political factor, but to sanitize the state of crime and criminalities.
He equally appealled to practicing journalists to always cross check their information before publishing, rather than report sensationally.
Early, the outgoing police Commissioner, Paul Okafor who said, during his eight months in office, he tackled the problems of cultism, acts of kidnapping, armed robbery and sea piracy in the state, noted that these criminalities have reduced drastically in the state during his tenure as commissioner of police for the state.
The outgoing commissioner who has been posted to the Police College Ikeja, Lagos, called on the officers and men of the force to cooperate with the new commissioner in order to flush out all acts of criminalities in the state.
He lauded the officers and media executives in the state for making his stay easy by showing maximum support to crime fighting in the state.
