Igbo Civil Society Coalition (ICSC), on Wednesday condemned what it called “militarization” of the South East and South South zones of the country and alleged attempt on the life of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The national coordinator of Igbo Civil Society Coalition (ICSC), Prof. Obasi Igwe, in a statement made available to journalists in Enugu, stated that the militarization was uncalled for as no part of the South East or South South was in conflict or had experienced break down of law and order.
“Once again, civil society groups and individuals are condemning in no uncertain terms, the ongoing efforts of the army to militarize Igboland and other parts of Southern and Middle Belt Nigeria, in coordination with fully armed and embedded “herdsmen”.
“No part of  Igboland or East is at war with anybody; the conflict zones are at the border, where the Cameroonian army have snatched from Nigeria our Bakassi territory; southern Kaduna and other parts of Nigeria, where Fulani are being aided to wipe out the indigenous populations; the North East Nigeria and Sambisa forest, where the Boko Haram are being forgiven, pampered, rehabilitated and redeployed; and the Nigeria-Niger border, through which all sorts of heavy and light weapons are unlawfully being allegedly moved into the far north in readiness for war against other Nigerians.
“Neither Igboland nor the East is the most criminalized part of Nigeria.  Most crimes in Igboland and East are being sponsored by secret agents intent on creating an excuse for renewed genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Igbos. Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB are seeking their goal by peaceful means, and at least two courts of superior jurisdiction have set him and his friends free unconditionally.
“It is therefore immoral for anyone to degenerate to the political concoctions of a lower court to seek to kill him even inside his father’s bedroom. Moving tanks and shooting at unarmed civilians inside or in front of a peaceful compound is not a great way to exhibit bravery or “defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity,” he said.
According to Prof. Obasi, no army in the modern world conducts “routine” or “normal” operations using civilians in target practice.
“This is not 1967, so, the attempts to persuade other Nigerians to support the eradication of Igbos or anyone else will not succeed. The unlawful “python dance” must immediately be withdrawn, and those perpetrating sundry atrocities under that pretext immediately brought to justice,’ he said.
The ICSC coordinator said that what the Igbos need was industries and employment opportunities, not pythons or any other schemes “to provoke Rwanda genocide or Yemeni situations once again in our land”.
