Uba Waziri, the Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Edo Command, has urged the mainstream media to ensure thoroughness and factual reportage of issues in the society.
Waziri made the call on Thursday in Benin when the Zonal Manager, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Benin Zone, Mr. Kevin Okunzuwa and other members of staff visited him.
He said that NAN and other mainstream media organisations in the country owed the nation a duty to disseminate only true and well-investigated reports.
“The society expects to get well-researched, accurate and correct information from the conventional media.
”Fake news is already taking over the media space, but the mainstream media must maintain their integrity and commitment to the truth,” he said.
The Comptroller expressed his willingness to make information about the Command’s operations available to NAN.
”We urge NAN to give adequate coverage to our activities. Our doors here are open. We do not have any barriers.
”We seek close collaboration with you. Henceforth, NAN should be part of all our activities in this Command,” he said.
Waziri further said that the NIS in Edo had done a lot in the areas of migration control and smuggling of migrants among others.
Earlier in his address, Okunzuwa said that the visit was to establish a synergy between the two Federal Government establishments.
He said that NAN was always ready to give appropriate publicity to government establishments in the zone.
The Zonal Manager urged the Immigration Service to always respond whenever the agency sought clarification on issues.
He said that such response would guard against speculation and rumour.
