Iran World Cup participation in doubt after airstrikes

Iran’s participation in the next FIFA World Cup has been thrown into doubt following recent United States and Israeli airstrikes in the Middle East.

After the attacks, which reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, admitted that the situation has created serious uncertainty.

Speaking on Iranian television, Taj said it was difficult to look ahead to the World Cup after what had happened. He explained that the final decision would be taken by the country’s top sports authorities.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with matches set to take place across the three countries.

Meanwhile, Mattias Grafstrom, the secretary general of FIFA, said the governing body is closely watching developments in the region.

He stated that it was too early to comment in detail but stressed that FIFA’s main focus remains on delivering a safe tournament with all qualified teams taking part. Grafstrom added that the organisation would continue to communicate with the three host governments to ensure the safety of players, officials and supporters.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump confirmed Khamenei’s death in a post on his Truth Social platform. In his message, Trump described the Iranian leader in strong terms and said his death represented justice for Americans and others around the world.

With tensions rising in the Middle East, the global football community is now waiting to see how the political situation could affect one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
