In a bout of disheartening news, it was announced on July 20, 2025 that critically acclaimed actor, Malcolm-Jamal Warner of “The Cosby Show” fame had passed away in a swimming accident. He was 54 years old.

Warner was reported swimming at Playa Cocles, in Costa Rica, when he was caught in a high current that led to his drowning. Though he was retrieved from the ocean by those nearby, he was pronounced dead upon reaching land. Medics officially declared his cause of death as asphyxia, the deficit of oxygen, via submersion due to his drowning.

Warner’s death was one of major shock and pain to the acting community, who immediately rushed to social media and other outlets with tributes and effusions of sorrow. Warner was largely regarded as a kind soul, even being described by actor Morris Chestnut as “a really, really good, genuine guy”. “[Malcolm] was one of the most kind people in the industry that I’ve ever met. When I came onto The Resident, the whole cast welcomed me with open arms”, Chestnut said about his interactions with Warner. “I used to look at The Cosby Show when I was young and I used to see myself in him.”

Warner was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, named after African-American revolutionary, Malcolm X and jazz pianist, Ahmad Jamal. Warner moved to California early in life, being raised in Los Angeles, but returned to the northeast for performance arts school at The Professional Children’s School in New York City. His acting career began in 1982 with the crime drama series “Matt Houston”, but he rose to fame years later with his role as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show”. Huxtable was the son of Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, who was played by Bill Cosby – Dr. Huxtable was the show’s main protagonist. Warner’s performance in the series was enough for national recognition and a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, which was at the 1986 38th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Aside from his role on “The Cosby Show”, Warner also made major appearances in other series such as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Touched by an Angel”. He also earned film roles in “Drop Zone”, “The Tuskegee Airmen”, and other 1990s-era films. His personal breakthrough was at the end of the century with “Malcolm & Eddie”, a sitcom he co-starred in alongside stand-up comedian Eddie Griffin.

Warner’s activity in the film and television industries remained consistent up until his death, even appearing in the crime drama series “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” as recently as 2025. He also took up careers in poetry, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album in the 2023 65th Annual Grammy Awards. He also took up podcasting in 2024, starting the culture-oriented “Not All Hood” podcast alongside co-hosts Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley.

There is no concrete information on Mr. Warner’s survivors, although he was known to have an unidentified wife and daughter.
