Jonathan: Electoral manipulation still a major threat in Africa
Former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, has said electoral manipulation remains one of the greatest threats to democracy in Africa.
He made this known during the 2025 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue held in Accra, Ghana.
According to Jonathan, when democracy fails to meet the expectations of the people, it can lead to desperation, and can open the way for authoritarian rule.
He called on African leaders to embrace a form of democracy that secures a better future for children and allows citizens’ voices to be heard.
“Democracy in Africa is going through a period of strain and faces the risk of collapse unless stakeholders come together to rethink and reform it,” Jonathan said.
“One of the major problems is our electoral system. People manipulate the process to remain in power by all means. We in Africa must begin to look at our democracy and reshape it in a way that works well for our people.”
