Lagos State government has banned the hosting of end-of-year parties and other social functions in public schools in the state, warning that violators ‘will be brought to justice.’
Speaking in Lagos, Tuesday, at a press briefing to unveil the state’s roadmap for the education sector in the fiscal year, Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, said the heads of public schools at all levels have been directed to henceforth put a stop to allowing their school premises to be used for parties.
Adebule, while answering questions from journalists, said, “Governor Akinwumi Ambode has given the directive and anyone who violates this will be dealt with accordingly.”
The deputy governor also noted that the free meal project of the state government was largely dependent on the Federal Government.
“The Federal Government is to provide a percentage of the funds needed and we are still waiting for them. We are looking towards next session but the kick-off will greatly be determined by the support of the Federal Government.”
Earlier, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the budget for education in 2016 had been designed to bring back the glory of both private and public schools in the state.
While reeling out the plans of the state government for the sector, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bankole, said the recruitment of 1,300 primary school teachers was ongoing and that model schools with necessary facilities would be built across the state. He, however, said the initiative would start with 10 schools.
“We are working on introducing ‘Ibile tablet’ to be distributed to our pupils, starting with secondary schools and each of the tablets would have the curriculum of studies in them.
“Also, there will be Personal Identification Number for all pupils in Lagos State and we are promoting access to knowledge by upgrading public libraries in the state. As a matter of fact, we are planning to build the biggest digital library in the world, and the project would soon commence. We are looking at between second and third quarter of the year,” Ayorinde said.
