Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan

The Joint military force deployed to the Niger Delta has confirmed the death of one soldier and injury of another soldier in the attack at a gunboat stationed behind Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s residence.

The military said that its gunboat stationed at the creek behind the former president’s house came under attack but the soldiers repelled the attack by engaging the gunmen in a gun duel.

Unidentified gunmen suspected to be militants on Tuesday morning attacked a security post near Jonathan’s Otuoke country home at about 3.00 am when the former President was supposed to be at home for the yuletide.

Jonathan was however not present at the time of the incident according to sources in the community..

Major Jonah Unuakhalu, Spokesman, Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe who confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) noted that the military had launched a manhunt for the gunmen in the creeks and waterways.

“At about 3am today, unknown gunmen attacked our gun boat deployed close to the house of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The vigilant troops repelled the attack while some of the assailants escaped with gunshot wounds.

“However, during the attack one soldier paid the supreme price and another was wounded in action.

“The wounded has been evacuated to the hospital and responding to treatment.

“Preliminary Investigation is ongoing to identify the persons or groups behind the attack.

“The people are advised to go about their lawful businesses as the security of lives and properties is priority to Operation Delta Safe during the Yuletide period and beyond.” he said.

Jonathan who was in his Yenagoa residence when the incident happened visited the incident site to assess the situation, condemned the incident and assured his kinsmen that there was no cause for alarm.

Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has condemned the attack and described it as despicable.

He said the incident defies logic and should be condemned without reservation by all right-thinking Nigerians.

The Senate President called on the relevant security agency to get to the roots of the barbaric incident with a view to bringing those behind it to justice.

Lawan commended the security personnel on guard for their prompt response and bravery in foiling the dastardly intentions of the attackers and also commiserated with the family of the soldier who lost his life in the incident.
