New fuel prices as it concerns South East zone is bizzare, weird, voodoo economics – Group

The Credibility Group has “unreservedly condemned” the NNPC Ltd.’s recently released new price of fuel, especially as it affects the South East geo-political zone of the country.

An open letter of protest, by Chief Goddy Uwazuruike, President of the Group, said that the price list, which equated the cost of fuel to the users in the South East with those in the North West parts of Nigeria is bizarre.

Addressed to the Chief Executive, NNPC Ltd and titled “Re: The Recent Petrol Prices” the letter said the price deferential between petrol in the South South zone and the South East zone is also inexplicable.

“It is a well-known fact that the fuel consumed in the South East and South South is transported from Port Harcourt and Warri Depots. The user in the South South pays N179 per litter but must pay N184 the moment he crosses the Niger or Imo River Bridges.

“What is mindboggling is that the two zones are intertwined so much so that the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road really has no demarcation,” the letter said.

Most worrisome, the group pointed out, is the strange arithmetic that makes fuel price cheaper in the North Central zone than in the South East zone.

It said: “Now it gets very weird, if not a voodoo economics that fuel is cheaper in the North Central zone than in the oil producing South East,” and demanded the immediate reversal of this jaundiced price regime that equates to an attempt at the economic strangulation of the South East zone of the country, insisting that the price list is patently unfair and unjust.
