New York City, Jersey City to headline 4th of July with Fireworks Festivals

By Isiah Christie

Big-city fireworks are a spectacle to behold – the bright lights and unique displays fill the sky with vibrance as thousands watch from underneath, appreciative of the unity a holiday like the 4th of July brings. Although America is amidst a period that is possibly more divisive than ever, something about its inaugural holiday brings forth a charming essence that forces feelings of proud celebration. The holiday’s fireworks displays are the perfect avenue to channel this feeling, and every big city is aware of that opportunity. New York City and Jersey City in particular hold no hesitance, and will be gathering residents in pursuit of camaraderie this upcoming week.

New York City Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Display and Other N.Y.C. Fireworks Shows

A tradition dating back to 1976, the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display has been held regularly as one of many New York City celebratory traditions. It is broadcast as a special on NBC and can be watched that way, although consensus preaches that an in-person experience is far superior. Held over the East River and launched from Brooklyn Bridge, the display will light up the City’s skyline in a never-before-seen manner.

Mayor Eric Adams intends for this display to be one of the City’s most iconic, with it coinciding with New York City’s 400th anniversary. “As we celebrate 400 years since New York City’s founding, we’re thrilled to welcome the crowds, once again, to experience an unforgettable Independence Day at our world-famous Brooklyn Bridge and East River skyline!”, Adams proclaimed in excitement. The East Side and Long Island City are expected to be the best views of the event.

Outside of the optimal Long Island viewing locations, there are also multiple watch parties of the fireworks being held in other areas of New York City. This includes Manhattan’s “One World Observatory 4th of July Fireworks”, held at 8 p.m. at the 1 World Trade Center, and Queens’ “41st Independence Day Celebration” held at 7 p.m. in Astoria Park. Both events, much like the Macy’s Fireworks display, are free admission.

Jersey City’s 4th of July Festival + Fireworks Spectacular

With the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Display headlining New York City, New Jersey finds itself in a mild bout of competition. Jersey City intends to combat its parallel metropolis with a fireworks display of its own, being held at Exchange Place in the form of a city-wide cookout.

The activities and vendors expected to attend are varied, including three DJ stages, beer gardens, a kids’ zone, and tens of food trucks including an assortment of dishes, from soul food to Indian cuisine. “Each year, Jersey City’s Fourth of July Festival brings people together from throughout the tri-state area to celebrate our country’s independence in one of the most diverse cities in America,” Mayor Steven Fulop said in pride of his city. Considering the ever-expanding nature of America’s most diverse place of residence, it’s undeniable that Jersey City will continue to sustain this tradition as a significant undertaking at the national level.
