Given the New York Jets’ history of quarterback injuries, any news of such is an immediate rain cloud over the days of their fans. And following the news that newcomer quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the practice field with an injury on the morning of Thursday, June 24, 2025, there was major concern about if he would join the club of poor health within the organization. But when it was revealed that Fields had avoided the worst and simply suffered a dislocated right toe, the Jets’ seasonal outlook went from incredibly bleak to at least manageable.

As depressing a reality as it may be, quarterback losses are of no new nature to the Jets fanbase. Between the heartbreaking Achilles rupture of Aaron Rodgers in 2023, the knee injury and subsequent surgery of Zach Wilson in 2022, mononucleosis diagnosis of Sam Darnold in 2019, and jaw fracture of Geno Smith in 2015, there has almost been a curse of sorts following the organization’s top offensive playmakers in the past decade. Luckily enough, Fields’ injury has happened in the preseason, which lessens the chances of it impacting New York’s actual campaign. It is not likely that he will miss a substantial amount of time, and certainly not enough to trickle into the Jets’ Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

However, limiting Fields’ time off is still a necessity for New York. They won’t rush him back onto the field, considering his presence is a non-negotiable need to foster success, but they can’t get comfortable with letting him rest too much either. Fields is new to the Jets’ infrastructure, meaning he needs time to learn, comprehend, and practice their playbook and embrace their culture. Doing such requires reps and on-field presence in practice, as he will otherwise have to ramp up as the season is beginning – and that is heavily exploitable, considering New York’s rather grueling schedule to start the season.

Should he return healthy and proper, Fields is expected to be a major impact piece for a Jets team that still hasn’t quite solved their quarterback problem this decade. While he does have his fair share of issues – namely regarding reading coverages and processing the game consistently – his signing has largely been regarded as a low-risk, high-reward move by pundits. New York only tossed a two-year, $40-million-dollar contract to Fields, which was about the best option for their off-season that balanced affordability and potential. Should he not pan out, their way out should not be tumultuous – but if he works, it will certainly benefit the franchise’s direction and thirst for a winning culture.

There’s no telling how Fields will perform once he’s back on the field, but if his 4-2 record as a starter with Pittsburgh last season is any indicator, the upside is up for grabs. It’s a matter of if he claims it, and that starts with health – so Jets fans are surely rooting for their quarterback’s return to the field soon.
