Nigeria vs Cameroun is a fixture finely poised, and a rivalry that stems from far back in history. Both West African Nations are set to battle for a place in the Quarter-final of the AFCON.
Cameroun won their first continental title in the 1984 final against Nigeria, defeating the Eagles 3-1 in the final, setting the pace for a long-term rivalry.
In a quest to lift the AFCON title once again, one of the familiar foes will progress from this tie. After defeating Guinea Bissau 1-0 on Monday, the Super Eagles finished second in Group A to set up a tie with the second-placed team in Group B which turned out to be Cameroun whose position was stamped following a 3-2 win over Gambia.
Nigeria and Cameroun have faced off a total of seven times in the Africa Cup of Nations, each team with three wins and one draw with their most recent meeting being at this stage in the previous AFCON. The Super Eagles came out on top in that clash with a 3-2 victory and the Indomitable Lions will look to avenge.
Tactically, Jose Peseiro seems to have found solace in the 3-4-3 formation which helped him secure six points from two matches. The Portuguese manager in a press conference on Friday confirmed that it will be used to outwit Rigobert Song’s Lions.
Peseiro in his press conference also highlighted the importance of ‘finishing’ and wants the Super Eagles to do better going forward.
“I saw statistics yesterday, we created the highest number of chances in the group stage.
“If we create chances, then why do we need to change our style of play? Our team is playing well, we don’t need to change our strategy.
“What we need to do is start converting our chances. That’s what has been lacking for us.
“I think at times you can create less chances and score more goals. We hope things will improve for us in this aspect tomorrow. We want to score and win. It is important to defend well like we have been doing since the start of the competition,” Peseiro concluded.
The match will be played at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Saturday by 9 pm (WAT)
Either Angola or Namibia will qualify for the Quarter-final to set up a clash with one of these arch-rivals, Nigeria or Cameroun.
