In a keenly contested group A game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, Nigeria faced Equatorial Guinea in a battle that ended in a 1-1 draw at the Alassana Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
Nigeria started the game on a dominant note, with early opportunities that could have seen them take a comfortable lead. Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen had chances within the first ten minutes, testing Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper, Owono. Zaidu Sanusi also missed a golden opportunity to put the Super Eagles ahead, failing to convert a cross from new-boy Alhassan Yusuf.
However, Equatorial Guinea grew into the contest, and in the 36th minute, Ivan Salvador capitalized on a defensive lapse to fire a shot past the stranded Nigerian goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabili, giving Equatorial Guinea a 1-0 lead.
Nigeria responded swiftly, as Ademola Lookman provided a precise cross for Victor Osimhen, who headed home the equalizer just before half-time, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Super Eagles returned for the second half with renewed intensity, creating numerous chances to take the lead. However, Zaidu Sanusi, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Osimhen all squandered opportunities, with Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper, Owono, making crucial saves to deny Nigeria a lead.
Despite their efforts, Victor Osimhen missed another glaring opportunity, firing wide when one-on-one with the goalkeeper inside the final quarter. At the expiration of regulation time, it was 1-1, marking Equatorial Guinea’s 12th consecutive game without defeat.
Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper, Jesus Owono, was named the man of the match for his outstanding saves that contributed to securing a point for his team.
Following the draw, Cote d’Ivoire leads Group A after their 2-0 victory over Guinea Bissau. Nigeria’s AFCON campaign will continue as they face Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, January 18, 2024, while Equatorial Guinea will battle Guinea Bissau on the same day in Group A.
