Nigerian Academy of Science appoints President-elect, Vice President

The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), at its Annual General Meeting held in Lagos on Thursday, January 25, 2024 appointed Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo FAS as its President-elect.

Sambo, who is the immediate past Vice-President of the Academy, is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

A statement by Dr M. Oladoyin Odubanjo, Executive Secretary of the Academy, which announced the appointment, said that Sambo will take over as President of the Academy from Professor Ekanem Braide in January 2025.

Professor Sambo, OON, is a former Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Chair of the Nigerian Member Committee of the World Energy Council, Africa Region, former Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, and currently, the chairman of the
Ministerial Task Force on Power serving as advisory team on policies and innovative technologies.

Professor Friday Okonofua FAS (Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) is the new Vice-President of the Academy. He took over from Sambo at the recently held Annual General Meeting.

Okonofua is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Publications Committee of the Academy.

The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) was established in 1977 and is the foremost independent scientific body in Nigeria dedicated to the development and advancement of science, technology, and innovation in Nigeria and brings scientific knowledge to positively guide the
policies/strategic direction of the country.
