NSE President, Mr Otis Anyaeji, made this known on Friday while addressing newsmen in Abuja.
He said the summit would enable stakeholders to make inputs and proffer solution to the nation’s economic downturn.
“As part of our contributions to national development, we feel compelled to lend our voice to the public debate on the need for the federal government to convene a national economic summit.
“The summit will present unique opportunity for think tanks to proffer solutions, which when implemented, would revamp and re-position the economy
“This will create a platform to bring stakeholders from the public and private sectors together to brainstorm on realistic ideas aimed at recreating a robust and viable economy for Nigeria,’’ he said.
He said that NSE was prepared to partner with government by deploying the strong connections of the engineering profession to agricultural, infrastructural and industrial development, for diversification of the economy.
Anyaeji also said that NSE would play leadership role toward positioning Nigeria to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the year 2030.
He, therefore, challenged the Nigerian engineers to be in the vanguard of the diversification of the economy to achieve sustainable national development.
“The Nigerian engineer must lead the narratives and thrust for national development, especially in these days of change,’’ he said.
Anyaeji disclosed that plans had been completed for the hosting of a workshop on the implementation of SDGs in Nigeria, with special focus on the engineering perspectives.
The NSE President also called for the restructuring of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), to allow engineers form the core membership of the commission.
