The website has been accused of unlawfully streaming copyrighted content from MultiChoice’s SuperSport channels, attracting millions of viewers from across Africa and beyond.

The arrest took place on August 22 in Osogbo, Osun State, following an extensive investigation that spanned several months. This operation marks a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against intellectual property theft and online streaming piracy in Nigeria.

According to authorities, the suspect is currently in police custody and could face a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted. The successful operation underscores the commitment of Nigerian law enforcement agencies to clamp down on digital piracy and protect the rights of content creators and legitimate broadcasters.

Reacting to the development, Frikkie Jonker, Director of Broadcasting and Cyber Piracy at Irdeto, expressed gratitude for the diligent efforts of the Nigerian Police Force in bringing the suspect to justice.

“All forms of piracy continue to pose a significant threat to the creative industry. At Irdeto, we are fully committed to addressing every facet of piracy, whether it occurs online or through other means,” Jonker stated. “The arrest of this notorious pirate is a testament to what can be achieved when law enforcement agencies and private sectors work hand in hand. We sincerely appreciate the Nigerian Police’s unwavering support, which has led to this positive outcome.”

This arrest is expected to serve as a deterrent to other individuals involved in similar illicit activities and reinforces the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and private organizations in combating digital piracy. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to continuing such operations to safeguard intellectual property rights and support the growth and sustainability of the creative and broadcasting industries in Nigeria.

Further investigations are ongoing, and more actions are anticipated as part of the broader initiative to eradicate online piracy and uphold the rule of law in the digital space.
