Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency, Ambassador Tijjani Muhammad-Bande is organising a Dinner Reception for Permanent Representatives, Deputy Permanent Representatives, Elections Officers and other stakeholders in appreciation of the overwhelming support received towards the election of Nigeria’s Ms. Esther Eghobamien-Mshelia to the UN Committee on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
Ms. Eghobamien-Mshelia won the keenly contested election held at the UN headquarters, New York, yesterday, Thursday, June 23, 2022, scoring 137 votes out of 187, in the contest where only 94 votes were needed to be elected.
She is to fill one of the 12 vacant positions in CEDAW and would serve for three years from 2023 to 2026.
The reception in her honor by the UN Mission holds today, Friday, June 24, 2022 from 6:00PM at the 21st Floor Reception Hall of Nigeria House, 828 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
Ms. Eghobamien-Mshelia, a gender expert, had served as a member of the CEDAW Committee in 2018 to fill the void occasioned by the demise of Nigeria’s former representative in CEDAW, a body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
