The Gambian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Muhammadou Njie, says there is no better alternative to democracy as a form of government.

Njie made the assertion at the fifth edition of the West African Leadership Summit held in Lagos.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Olawale Owoyomi, Convener of the West Africa Sub-region Summit, made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Ibadan.

He said that in spite of the recent come back of coup d’etats in some West African countries like Mali, Gambia and Equatorial Guinea, the system of government had been vehemently criticised by critical stakeholders.

Njie, however, decried the practice in some parts of Africa, where military officials were indulged in seeking power by any means.

The diplomat said that there was no justification for military to take over government in any part of the continent.

According to him, Democracy remains the best form of government across different parts of the world, including Africa and it must be protected by all.

Earlier, Owoyomi, at the summit, explained that the goal of the summit was to ensure the next generation of leaders are prepared for the future.

Owoyomi said the summit would equip them to change the narrative of Africa being branded as an under-developed continent with sub-standard leadership.
