Obi becomes Honorary Citizen of Georgia, USA; Asks Diasporans to promote good governance in African

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, was, on Thursday, September 25, 2025, conferred an Honorary Citizenship of Georgia, by the State of Georgia, United States of America (USA). This was one of the highlights of his three-day visit to the US.

Before the honor bestowed on him, the former Governor of Anambra State, according to a post on his X (former Twitter) handle, had participated in the Black Congressional Week programs in Washington DC which had a special emphasis on Georgia State events.

At the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception, hosted by U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock at the U.S. Senate Kennedy Caucus Room, Mr. Obi said that Senator Warnock, a strong advocate for Africa’s development, encouraged him to discuss African democracy and development.

He said he was also “hosted by Georgia Power, the largest independent power company in Georgia, which generates and distributes over 20,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide,” noting that his “conversation with the company’s CEO, Ms. Kim Clark, was deeply insightful.”

At a One Voice Africa event, which, according to him, was organised by a group that is committed to defending Black immigrant dignity, he said he “urged them to take a greater interest in promoting good governance in Africa, noting that Africa’s potential is immeasurable if led by visionary and responsible leaders.”

He noted that for him, “the day’s events were about learning, serving, and remaining committed to building a new Nigeria that is truly possible.”
