Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh, was in-charge of Home-based Super Eagles’ first training session in Pretoria, South Africa ahead of the 2016 African Nations Championship which kicks off on January 16 in Rwanda.
Oliseh’s return was a confirmation that he has recovered fully from the virus infection that kept him away from the team for the better part of late last year.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials confirmed, weekend, that Oliseh was on ground to receive the team from Abuja
“Oliseh is fully recovered now. We met him at the hotel on our arrival and he started training the team today (Sunday),” disclosed Oliseh’s special assistant Tijjani Babangida.
He put the boys through their paces, correcting their mistakes and joining them in the game itself. He’s looking a lot healthier.”
On Wednesday, the Eagles will play a warm-up game against another CHAN-bound team Angola.
They are also slated to face Cote d’Ivoire on January 11 before they depart for Rwanda.
Oliseh last week named the roster for the 2016 CHAN without last season’s NPFL leading scorer and Warri Wolves forward, Gbolahan Salami, who failed to turn up in the team’s training camp in Abuja, thereby fuelling speculation of a possible move abroad in the January transfer window.
Apart from backing the duo of Adeniji and Chikatara, who scored a combined 29 league goals for their clubs, Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars respectively, in the NPFL last term, Efugh is confident the Nigerian squad are good enough to win the 2016 CHAN.
“Yes I see them winning the trophy,” the former Enugu Rangers man said to supersport.com. “They (the Nigerian team) have experienced players.”
However, before thinking of the African title, Nigeria will have to navigate through a group with Tunisia, Niger Republic and Guinea as opponents.
The Super Eagles are to begin their bid to reach the quarterfinal stage of the CHAN against Niger Republic at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo in Kigali, Rwanda on January 18.
