Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, remains the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Worldwide, the Spiritual Leader and Global Missioner of the RCCG.
This clarification followed the misunderstanding, in some quarters, of Pastor Adeboye’s announcement at the Annual Ministers Thanksgiving of the Church, held at the new Auditorium of the Redemption Camp on Saturday, January 7, 2017, of the appointment of Pastor Joseph Obayemi as the new Overseer of the Church in Nigeria.
Pastor Funsho Odesola, Assistant General Overseer (Admin & Personnel) was also announced the General Secretary of the RCCG in Nigeria while Pastor Joseph Adeyokunnu, the Financial Controller of the Church was appointed the Treasurer, RCCG, Nigeria.
.A statement by Leke Adeboye, the General Overseer (GO)’s last son and Personal Assistant (PA), said the new structure of the Church in Nigeria is a consequence of new legal requirements set up by the Financial Regulations Council, FRC, guiding all registered churches, mosques, and CSOs.
The regulation stipulates that heads of non-profit organisations like churches now have a maximum period of 20 years to lead their organizations, and while in retirement, they are not permitted to hand over to their family members.
This regulation is expected to affect such other prominent Church leaders as Pastor William Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Church, Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church, also called Winners Church and Bishop Mike Okonkwo of TREM.
Pastor Adeboye, who turns 75 on March 2 this year, was born in Ifewara, Osun State and got his B.Sc. in Mathematics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Lagos.
He was a lecturer in Mathematics at the Universities of Lagos and Ilorin, before going into full time Ministry in 1984.
He joined the RCCG in 1973 and was, in 1981 appointed General Overseer of the then little-known church.
He took over from Pa Josiah Akindayomi and has grown the Church phenomenally, from relative obscurity to its present mega status.
The Church, which is the biggest in Nigeria is now present in about 192 countries of the world and has more than 14,000 Parishes in the country.
The newest ultra modern Auditorium of the Church, measuring 3 kilometres by 3 kilometres, ranks among the biggest in the world.
The Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, is a senior Pastor of RCCG.
