YENAGOA
There was a harvest of armed robbery and cult-related cases in Bayelsa state as the Police command on Thursday arrested and paraded a 22 year old kingpin with a hunchback and 30 others for various crimes ranging from armed robbery, cultism and acts of kidnapping across the state capital.
The suspected kingpin confessed to the crime and said he was forced to join the Greenlander cult group in the past two years, saying that he is the unit head of the group in the state.
Police said that among those arrested was a suspected kidnapper, Timipre Moni, 26 years. who abducted a lady, Joy Epidi along Imiringi in Bayelsa state
The command also said the success achieved was made possible by the partnership with members of the public who reported acts of criminalities to the Police for prompt action.
Briefing newsmen in Yenagoa, Commissioner of Police, Asuquo Amba said the Police would not relent in its efforts to reduce crime and criminalities to the barest minimum in Bayelsa state.
Amba said the arrest of the suspects was made possible through the donation of patrol vehicles by the state Governor, Seriake Dickson, to the command some weeks ago to fight crimes.
The commissioner said members of Greenlanders and Icelander cult groups were arrested as they were terrorizing the streets of Yenagoa, killing and maiming innocent persons even as they rob passersby of their belongings.
Bayelsa state is no longer a safe place for cultists and armed robbers as the Governor has charged heads of schools in the state not to allow cults to use their premises as recruiting centres, Amba said
He noted that the suspects were arrested in the past three weeks across the city for unwholesome activities.
The Police Commissioner said most of the suspects robbed with tricycles, while others dispossessed innocent persons of their handsets, laptops and bags.
According to Amba, other suspects were arrested for illegal possession of firearms, stealing and indulging in unlawful drugs.
The commissioner said on arrest, they confessed to the crime as locally made pistols, charms, live cartridges and stolen vehicles were recovered from the suspects.
He insisted that they are still facing interrogation and would soon be charged to court.
