Reading FC sack Yakubu Aiyegbeni, 4 others

Former Nigeria International Yakubu Aiyegbeni along with four other teammates have been offloaded by Reading FC of England, as the 32-year-old striker was shown the exit door by the Royals following manager Steve Clarke plans to strengthen his squad with better talent after a disappointing season.

Reading quintet of Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Zat Knight, Danny Guthrie, Jure Travner and Mikkel Andersen have been told to leave as manager Steve Clarke plans to shake up his team in the summer.

The Nigerian striker, who joined the Madejski based outfit for Qatari side Al Rayyan boasts of a goal in seven games for Clarke’s men in the outgoing season.

“As we enter our third year out of the Premier League, the club’s owners recognise the need for Steve Clarke to freshen his squad ahead of the new campaign, and this is the beginning of that process,” an official club statement read.

“After a period of financial instability and with the Financial Fair Play regulations in place, the owners are also making a concerted effort to get back to the sensible wage principles that have long been the club’s trademark.

“Striking the right balance will be key to a sustainable model for success.”

Aiyegbeni scored 95 goals in the English Premier League during spells at Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn Rovers.

Reading reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup this season where they lost to Arsenal, but finished a disappointing 19th in the Championship , just nine points above the drop zone.
