As Christians nationwide commemorate Easter, the Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a call for heightened vigilance and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the DSS advised against engaging in illicit behaviors such as drug abuse and excessive alcohol consumption, while also rejecting bigotry and other social vices during the festivities.
Dr. Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the DSS National Headquarters in Abuja, emphasized the importance of renewing commitment to Nigeria’s peace, unity, and inclusiveness. In a statement released on Friday, he conveyed the Service’s felicitations to Christians on Easter celebrations and urged citizens to draw lessons from the forbearance and humility exemplified by Jesus Christ.
The statement further encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion, which symbolizes sacrifice and forgiveness, to strengthen their bonds of love for one another and promote unity within the nation. Citizens were urged to exhibit self-control, discipline, and compassion in their interactions, while also refraining from spreading fake news, hate speech, and engaging in violent behaviors.
The statement reads, “The Director General, Management and Staff of the Department of State Services (DSS) wish to felicitate the Christian faithful on the celebration of Easter.
“It also uses this opportunity to call on Nigerians to draw lessons from the forbearance and humility of Jesus Christ and apply the same in their daily affairs.
“The Service reminds them to use the event which illustrates sacrifice and forgiveness to refocus their love for one another, the nation and humanity at large.
“On this note, citizens are encouraged to adopt self-control, discipline and compassion in their dealings and conducts. The Service enjoins them to eschew bitterness, disloyalty, fake news, hate speech and violence.”
