Vice President Kashim Shettima has congratulated Samson Adamu on his appointment as General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing it as a major achievement for Nigeria and its sports administration.
Shettima spoke on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while receiving Adamu alongside the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko.
Adamu, who was appointed on Sunday, November 1, is the first Nigerian to occupy the position in CAF’s 70-year history.
The Vice President said his appointment showed that Nigeria has the talent and ability to produce leaders who can hold important positions in international sports organisations.
He noted that Nigeria had achieved great success in sports over the years because of the talent, hard work and determination of its people.
According to Shettima, Adamu’s achievement should inspire young Nigerians who hope to take up leadership roles in international sports administration.
He also urged the new CAF General Secretary to carry out his duties with integrity, dedication and national pride while protecting Nigeria’s interests in African football.
Shettima further described football as a powerful tool for national unity, saying the sport brings Nigerians together regardless of their ethnic, religious and social backgrounds.
He also praised coaches, talent scouts, sports administrators and institutions for their contributions to the discovery and development of Nigerian athletes.
The Vice President recalled the achievements of Nigerian football legends such as Rashidi Yekini, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha and Finidi George, noting that their success was made possible by those who discovered and supported their talents.
Earlier, Dikko thanked the Federal Government for its support for sports development, saying the government’s commitment had helped improve Nigeria’s position in international sports.
He described Adamu’s appointment as an important moment for Nigerian sports administration.
Dikko also commended the Federal Government for approving Nigeria’s hosting of the CAF General Assembly and CAF Awards in November and December 2026, respectively.
In his response, Adamu described his appointment as a historic achievement and promised to use his experience as CAF’s former Director of Competitions to improve the organisation’s administration and support the growth of African football.
He also pledged to support efforts to develop Nigeria’s football talents and help the country achieve greater success at continental and international levels.
As CAF General Secretary, Adamu will oversee the organisation’s daily activities and play a key role in implementing its policies and programmes.
