President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, will Monday, August 12, 2024, preside over an “Unprecedented debate on United Nations Security Council reform” at the United Nations Security Council, UN HQ, New York, United States of America (USA).

The program, which will be broadcast live worldwide on UN Web TV and on X (former Twitter) as well as on YouTube and other online platforms, will take place from 10:00 AM EST in New York and Santiago; 2:00 PM GMT/Freetown; 4:00 PM Geneva/Vienna; 5:00 PM Nairobi/Pretoria and 9:00 PM Bangkok.

The focus of the debate will be the “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Addressing the historical injustice and enhancing Africa’s effective representation in the UN Security Council,” while the objective will be to unlock the full potential of Africa as a dynamic and vibrant continent capable of contributing meaningfully to the advancement of peace, security, and prosperity worldwide.

President Bio, who is also the Coordinator of the African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government on the Reform of the UN Security Council (C-10), apart from presiding over the unprecedented debate, will also launch a Peace Exhibition at the UN
Delegates Entrance at 5:00 PM EST.

This Peace Exhibition, according to a notice from Ms. Onike C. Spencer-Coker, Spokesperson, Permanent Mission of the Republic of Sierra Leone, “will highlight Sierra Leone’s journey towards peace, underscoring the importance of international cooperation. In this journey, Sierra Leone’s partnership with the United Nations is seen as a model for national ownership in UN-led peacekeeping and peacebuilding.”

Sierra Leone is the current President of the UN Security Council.
