The Sokoto State Government has provided an office space for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to set up its new Field Office in Sokoto. The office is to enable UNICEF cover its programmes in three states of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara.
This is just as the State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, also, weekend, administer the oath of office to newly-elected 22 local government council chairmen in the state.
The Governor, while announcing the gesture to the United Nations body, said the Sokoto State Government allocated the premises to UNICEF as part of a goodwill gesture and in recognition of a long cooperation and outstanding contribution from UNICEF to the country.
He thanked UNICEF for all the efforts put forward by UNICEF to improve the life of the people of Sokoto and Nigerians as a whole.
The governor also used the occasion to debunk the erroneous belief that girl-child education was not encouraged in the state. He cited the recent launching of the campaign for enrolment by the state government, which he said yielded positive results as it attracted over one million students.
Meanwhile, swearing-in the newly-elected 22 local government council chairmen, Governor Tambuwal warned them against hibernating in hotels in Sokoto and its environs.
Tambuwal also swore in Alhaji Ahmed Miadamma as the Sole Administrator for Gudu Local Government, where election was stopped by the State Independent Electoral Commission due to some abnormalities in the branded ballot papers.
“The previous nefarious habit of some of your predecessors, who abandoned their various local governments and hid in hotels in Sokoto as well as other hideouts, will no longer be tolerated.
“You must stay in your respective local governments and deliver the needed social service to the people. Any council chairman, who is found wanting in this direction, will be dealt with accordingly.
The governor called on them to prioritise sectors, like education, agriculture, health, youth and women empowerment. He also called on them to maintain peace and security, saying that they should endeavour to propel sustainable development in all possible ways.
