Spain produced a superb all-round performance to beat favourites France 2-0 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup final after an entertaining semi-final at Dallas Stadium.
Luis de la Fuente’s side defended brilliantly, controlled possession and took their chances to end France’s hopes of reaching a third successive World Cup final.
Spain took the lead in the 24th minute after Lamine Yamal was brought down in the penalty area by France left-back Lucas Digne. Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1-0.
France struggled to create clear opportunities despite boasting attacking stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise. Spain’s organised defence and disciplined midfield prevented Les Bleus from finding their usual attacking rhythm.
Spain remained in control after the break and doubled their advantage through Pedro Porro. The full-back exchanged passes with Dani Olmo before firing a low finish into the net to give his side a comfortable cushion.
France pushed forward in search of a comeback but found it difficult to break down Spain’s solid backline. Their first shot on target came only in the closing stages as Spain comfortably protected their lead.
Rodri delivered another outstanding display in midfield, breaking up France’s attacks and dictating play, while Fabian Ruiz also impressed. Spain’s defence once again stood firm, having now conceded just one goal throughout the tournament.
The victory sends Spain into the World Cup final, where they will face the winners of the second semi-final between England and Argentina. They will be aiming to lift the World Cup trophy for only the second time in their history.
For France, the defeat ends their title dream and their bid to reach a third consecutive World Cup final. Didier Deschamps’ side will now play in the third-place play-off, which will also be the veteran coach’s final tournament match after 14 years in charge.
